The Hanafi clip that will not die.
A 2023 video still circulates: some Hanafi voices say a UK mortgage is not the prohibited riba, citing a report about the ḥarbī. The UK Islamic banks are not built on that clip. Neither is this issue.

Ibn-e-Khan’s July 2023 post of Mufti Zahid Hussain — ‘a mortgage does not fall under the prohibited ribā according to Hanafī fiqh’, with the ḥarbī report as a proof — has hundreds of thousands of views. It is the theological escape hatch for Muslims who will take the Halifax and want a scholar on the screenshot.
A minority street position is a fact. It is not a product. It is not AAOIFI. It is not a reason to skip the documents on an HPP.
What the clip is not
It is not the position of Al Rayan’s board, Gatehouse’s board, AAOIFI, or the bulk of UK mosque teaching on bank interest. The ḥarbī report is contested in transmission and in scope; using it to green-light a 25-year retail loan from a PLC that is not a wartime counterparty is a stretch even inside the school that hosts the debate.
This journal labels the topic split because the clip exists and families use it. We will not pretend the stretch is the madhhab. If you follow that view, you are not our customer for an HPP comparison — you already chose. If you do not, do not let a relative use the clip as a substitute for reading the late-payment clause on the lawful product.
